did the seagull fail to fly?
The young seagull
hesitated and feared to fly. He thought
that his wings would not support to fly him.
Hence the seagull failed to fly.
b b) What
did the parents do, when the young seagull failed to fly?
The young seagull’s
parents had come around calling to him shrilly, scolding him, threatening to
let him starve on his ledge, unless he flew away.
c) What
was the first catch of the young seagull’s older brother?
The first catch of the
young seagull’s older brother was herring, it was a type of fish.

What did the young seagull manage to find in his search for food on the
ledge?
The young seagull managed to find dried
pieces of mackerel’s tail. He had searched
every inch, rooting among the rough, dirt-cake straw nest where he and his
brothers and sister had been hatched. He
even gnawed at the dried pieces of eggshell.
e ) What did the young bird do to seek the attention of his parents?
The young seagull stepped slowly out to the brink of the ledge and standing on one leg with the other leg hidden under his wing, he closed one eye, then the other, and pretended to be falling asleep. This was done by the bird to seek the attention of his parents.
f) What
made the young seagull to mad?
The young seagull was very hungry. His mother tore at a piece of fish that lay
at her feet and then scraped each side of her beak on the rock. This sight of the food maddened the young
seagull.
g) Why did the young bird utter a joyful scream?
The young seagull was hungry and cried at his mother begging to bring him over some food. She screamed back mockingly and she picked up a piece of fish with it. This made the young seagull utter a joyful scream.

the mother bird offer any food to the young bird?
No, The mother bird did not offer any food
to the young bird.
e i) How did the bird feel when it started flying for the first time?
The young seagull was seized with fear for a moment and could feel the tips of his wings cut through the air. The next moment he was fearless, though felt a bit dizzy, flapped his wings to soar up and down with a joyous scream.
f) j) What did the young bird’s family do when he started flying?
When the young seagull started flying, the young bird’s family flying around him, praising, soaring and diving together with him.

1) How
was the young seagull’s first attempt to fly?
The young seagull’s
first attempt to fly was adventurous one. He became afraid. The great sea stretched down beneath and it
was long miles down.
He
did not want to spread his wings and fly along with his family. He felt certain that his wings would never
support him. So he ran back to the
little hole under the ledge where he slept at night.
2) How
did the parents support and encourage the young seagull’s brothers and sister?
The seagull’s parents
flew with his brothers and sister. They
helped them in the perfect art of flying.
They taught them to glide on the waves and how to dive for fish.
3) Give
an instance that shows the pathetic condition of the young bird.
The young seagull felt the heat of the
sun as he had not eaten anything since the previous night. When he found a dried piece of mackerel’s
tail he rushed to it. However, there was
not a single scrap of food left in it.
He searched every inch, even the straw nest where he and his brothers
and sister had been hatched. He even
gnawed at the dried pieces of eggshell. It was like eating a part of himself.
4) How
did the bird try to reach its parents without having to fly?
The young seagull
trotted back and forth from one end of the ledge to the other with his long
grey legs stepping daintily, trying to find some means of reaching his parents
without having to fly.
5) Do
you think that the young seagull’s parents were harsh to him? why?
No, I don’t think
so. There were not harsh but they were
wise. They wanted to teach him the
importance of the art of flying without any one’s help.
6) What
prompted the young seagull to fly finally?
The young seagull was
very hungry. The mother seagull showed a
piece of fish to the young seagull. But
he couldn’t reach the food as it was out of reach. He dived at the fish. Thus the parental care, its natural bird
instinct to fly and its urge for survival prompted the young seagull to fly,
finally.
7) What
happened to the young seagull when it landed on the green sea?
When
the young seagull landed on the green sea, his legs sank into it. He screamed with fright and attempted to rise
again. His feet sank into the sea. His belly touched the seawater. He sank no further. He was floating on it.
